Digital Art: MAtte & Production Painting


This powerful jam packed module of knowledge and speed empowers students who are already average to well-versed with Photoshop, or digital drawing/painting skills. Learners will get advanced and current industry techniques and processes, including usage of 3D, photo plates and textures to experiment, enhance and manipulate their ideas to awe-inspiring portfolio pieces.

Course Summary:​​

  • Concept development stage - Students will start ideation of their dream location, imaginary or inspired by real world. Students will be briefed on matte and production paintings of their uses in real world applications and begin their thumbnails.

  • Advanced Thumbnailing processes– Students will learn ways to generate landscapes very quickly and powerfully whilst employing and learning composition rules and tricks, absorbing tips from other industry pros and applying it to their final thumbnails.

  • Blocking and Collaging stage- Students will research, gather stock/3D for their chosen image and begin the collaging process. Using a series of Photoshop layers and tools, they will quickly assemble a potent piece of raw, yet vibrant base.

  • Painting and Finish- Students now have the mix of ingredients, and will now paint as well as use a myriad of tools and brush modes, followed by normal painting to flesh out the entire concept and finalize. Students will learn actual real world lighting, how colors are perceived as well as many useful and essential knowledge like color adjustments and achieve a greater grasp of painting skills in general.


Interest in arts, gaming, film, IP creation and environment arts.

Basic drawing skill is recommended. Digital Imaging skill is highly recommended.
